Lake Harmony man admits to copper thefts

A Lake Harmony man entered guilty pleas on Tuesday in Carbon County court in nine pending criminal cases. Copper piping was taken in all the incidents.

Erick James Rivera, 25, also faces a big restitution bill at the time of sentencing.Rivera pleaded to five counts of criminal trespass, three counts of receiving stolen property and one count of possession of an instrument of crime.Rivera was charged by Kidder Township police with entering various residences in the Ridgewood Estates and Laurel Woods development and removing copper piping. He would then take the piping to a Hazleton firm where he sold it for cash.He faces a preliminary restitution bill of $13,218.37. The incidents occurred over a time frame of October 2013 to March 2014.Rivera entered most of the residences through a crawl space. He has been in prison since his arrest. The case has been pending for a long time due to a total of 10 continuances filed in the cases.Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted the pleas but deferred sentencing, ordering the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
