Andreas parade displays spirit, tradition

The weather felt like late summer Wednesday night, but at the Andreas Halloween parade, the frightful season was in full swing.

More than a dozen floats and marching groups took part in the annual West Penn Township celebration.“This is a tradition going on for many years in this area, Bob Neumoyer of the West Penn Lions said. Each year, Neumoyer’s organization, the West Penn Lioness Club and Andreas Sporting Club organize the parade. They’re also responsible for judging the participants. Winners got cash prizes.Neighbors get in the spirit too. Christopher Wolfe and Christine Getz fully deck out their house along the route, continuing a tradition from their youth.“I’ve been coming ever since I was little,” Wolfe said. “We love the band.”The route is unique in that guests get to see the floats pass twice — and of course get twice the candy. The marchers set up at the Andreas Sporting Club, and came north through the town’s square before turning back around, giving spectators another look.Seven floats were entered in the judging. First place went to Tamaqua Fire Police; second, St. Peter’s Preschool; and third to Crystal View Carriage Service, who carried 2016 Carbon County Fair Queen Mercy Melo.Honorable mention went to Cub Scouts Pack 756 from West Penn, the Kunkle Grandchildren, Boyer’s Collectibles, and Lorah Property/Lorah Ground Repair. In the marching category, Girl Scout Senior Troop 3583 took first, Brownie Troop 3862 took second, and the West Penn Girl Scouts took third. Lehighton Junior Troop 3248 and Lehighton Daisy Troop 38 took honorable mention.
