46th Lehighton march provides a real treat

There were plenty of both tricks and treats during the 46th annual Lehighton Area Halloween Parade on Saturday.

The tricks included the members of Tumble With Denise doing hand springs, flips and other gymnastics along the parade route. The treats were more plentiful. There was the treat from Mother Nature, who provided gorgeous weather including temperatures in the 60s.There were the treats - and a lot of them - tossed by parade participants to eager children. And the biggest treat of all was the parade itself: A six-division march that was filled with a myriad themes and creativity that was incredible. The parade took about 75 minutes to pass. It featured five bands, six fire departments, over a half dozen Santas, hundreds of participants and even marching "unicorns."Serving as the grand marshal was the Lehighton Police Department. Led by Mayor Thomas Mase who rode in a police cruiser, six members of the department marched, and as they did they tossed candy to youngsters and chatted with the spectators. Two other police officers rode bicycles.Judy Harris, a member of the Lehighton Area Halloween Parade Committee, said, "I think it was a great parade. We had great weather."She said, "It was nice to see the police officers interacting with the community and handing out candy. I thought it was great."Evan Godwin of Towamensing Township said, "This is the first time I've seen Lehighton's parade and it is awesome. It's nice that the community comes together like this."Spectators lined the route two and three deep. In front of the judging stand, several hundred people gathered for the event. The unicorns in the parade were members of Lehighton Daisy Troop 38, who had the theme "We Are Just Like Unicorns: Beautiful and Unique."A dozen floats were in the parade, some very elaborate. Lehighton Cub Pack 187 had a float loaded with "pirates" and the theme was "Argh You Brave Enough to Be a Scout?"Lehighton Cub Pack 145's theme was "Train," which won a first-place prize.Several marching groups had train themes.Besides Cub Pack 145, members of Lehighton Brownie Troop 3862 were train cars and used the theme "Girl Scouts Are on the Right Track" and Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank had engine decals while employees wore engineering uniforms for the theme "Stay on track with JTNB - A real community bank."The only clown in the parade was "Buster the Clown," a staple at many fairs and festivals in the area. The group representing Chantilly Goods ice cream stand rode all types of bikes, including ones that required four people to pedal.First-place award winners in the parade are:• Cub Pack - Cub Pack 145, "Trains."• Brownies - Lehighton Brownie Troop 3176, "Girl Scouts are the best girls in the world!"• Girl Scouts - Lehighton Junior Troop 3248 - "Girl Scouts have a hopping good time."• Dance Groups - Tricia's Dance Extreme.
