Palmerton gears up for annual parade on Sunday

Palmerton's beloved Halloween Parade will take place Sunday afternoon, promising plenty creative floats, costumes, and of course, candy for the kids.

"There are going to be four divisions, including the Palmerton High School Band; Palmerton and Towamensing Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts; and of course the firetrucks and more," organizer Susan Arner said.Parade participants are asked to gather at Seventh Street and Delaware Avenue at 2:30 p.m. to receive location and parking directions. The celebration will kick off at 4 p.m., with the parade route closed off to traffic by about 3:15 p.m."A special thanks goes out to the Palmerton Borough and the Palmerton Fire Police for helping with the parade," Arner said. The parade route will start at Seventh and Franklin Avenue, go up Seventh to Lafayette Street, down Second to Franklin, over to Third Street, left on Third to Delaware Avenue, and then left on Delaware Avenue and back to the start at Seventh Street.Participants who are handing out candy will be stationed along the roadside during the event to prevent any observers from going onto the route during the parade. As for themes, Arner said that a diverse roster was always welcome, but this year saw a clear preference for one in particular."Superheroes really seem to have won out this year. We have three superhero entries," Arner said.Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including best costume, best automotive display and best float. The event will be announced by Tammy Recker, and judges will include Louise Koons, Connie Reinhart and Recker."The parade brings the community together in a fun, positive way that puts a smile on so many faces," Arner said. "It's a great chance for quality family time, and everyone needs that."Late entry is available until Saturday. Call Susan Arner at 484-522-8899 for details.
