Verizon still seeking tower site in Lower Towamensing

Still looking for a cellphone tower site in Lower Towamensing Township, Verizon Wireless is turning its attention to land owned by the municipality.

During a township meeting Tuesday night, supervisor Brent Green said the board had been contacted with a proposal for a tower in an area behind the township building on Hahn's Dairy Road."They've been looking for a site for many years," Green said of Verizon. "They tried at Palmerton Lumber and the residents didn't want it over there. They asked Palmerton School District and they said no."The proposal sent to the township calls for a five-year contract with renewal options totaling up to 25 years. The township would receive $12,000 per year with a 10 percent escalator every five years."That is the normal rate from what I understand," Green said.Lower Towamensing has 5 acres at the site in question, he added.Fellow supervisor Jesse Mendez said it could be an opportunity for additional revenue for the township, but discussion is in its infancy."They want something in Palmerton, but not in town," Green said. "They've asked for a meeting with us and we'll see where it goes from there."In other news Monday, supervisors:• Tabled a request for a donation for a flag pole at the exit of Route 248 near the entrance to Palmerton.• Announced Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. as trick-or-treat night.• Approved a garbage fee exemption for Richard Evans Jr.• Appointed Doug Lucich to the planning commission.
