Winery to help Family Promise of Carbon

Galen Glen's Winery, 255 Winter Mountain Drive, Andreas, will host "Verhext Weekend" Oct. 29-30 to help Family Promise of Carbon County, a program that keeps homeless families together with the help of local business and churches. It operates solely on donations.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to help these families get the supplies they need in a fun way," says tasting room manager Kathy Matson. "As we head into the winter months there are more and more families living in cars and under bridges right here in our own community and it is affecting fathers, mothers and children."Verhext means "bewitched" in German. The staff encourages visitors to be good witches and dress up in their favorite hat or ensemble when they visit the winery that weekend. The winery will be collecting bare necessities like personal shampoo, deodorant, soap, diapers, wipes, cleaning products and monetary donations to be given to the shelter. For every person who brings a monetary or "bare necessity" donation, the winery will give a complimentary pairing of a pumpkin kiffle with a taste of the newly released spice wine.Family Promise of Carbon County is based in Lehighton. The program allows families to stay and live together in the day center where they learn new skills to find better jobs and then in the evening at host churches where they have their own bedrooms. It is the only homeless program in the county for families. For more information visit familypromisecarboncounty.com. For more information about Galen Glen visit
