Two high school soccer games will be held to honor a local youth league soccer coach who passed away in August.

The girls’ team will take on the Palisades Pirates at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, while the boys will face off against the Lehighton Indians next Monday. Boys’ junior varsity will play at 5 p.m., with the varsity squad taking the field at 6:30 p.m.Each event will also feature a raffle and bake sale. All proceeds from the games will benefit John Green’s family, including his wife, Patti, and his sons Jonathan, 17, and Teegan, 15, who currently play on the high school soccer team. Green also had two older daughters, Carolann and Kirstan.Green, who held a certificate from the Welder Training and Testing Institute, was an active parent, a coach in Palmerton’s youth soccer league, and a participant in the local Boy Scouts. Green battled brain cancer for more than three years before passing away onAug. 31.“Even after he got his first tumor in 2013, he was still on the field,” Patti Green said of her husband and his dedication to athletics.Friends and members of the local sports community have come out in droves to orchestrate the benefits.“I met John back when our daughter played soccer at the Towamensing program,” said family friend Diane Huber. “My husband coached with John. He actually coached over 10 years in the Towamensing soccer program.”Huber proposed the idea of a soccer game to the Palmerton girls’ soccer team, which was met with enthusiasm.“The girls ultimately made the decision. It was unanimous amongst the girls who the game would benefit,” Huber said. The boys’ squad also rallied support for their fellow teammates and their family.“Each year the boys’ soccer team picks a cause for the benefit. Two of the boys are on the team, and we just thought it would be a good idea to help the family,” said Amy Hillanbrand, secretary for the Palmerton Area High School Soccer Parents’ Club and boys’ team benefit coordinator. In addition, the boys’ soccer team has been sporting green armbands in remembrance of the beloved coach.“It’s very generous, very thoughtful, overwhelming,” Patti Green said of the community effort.
