Woman who stole twice from same family given prison term

A Carbon County woman, who stole twice from the same family within hours, was sentenced to a county prison term Thursday after pleading guilty in two pending cases.

Jacqueline Brooke Evans, 25, of Albrightsville, pleaded before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count each of criminal attempt, criminal trespass and theft. In exchange for the pleas, charges of burglary, receiving stolen property, endangering the welfare of a child and access device fraud were dropped by the district attorney's office.Evans was arrested for incidents that occurred on June 22, 2015, ata West Broadway residence in Jim Thorpe. Evans entered the residence of a coupleand took a purse which contained the victim's credit cards. She and a co-defendant then went to the Walmart store in Mahoning Township and made purchases with the card. She later returned to the same residence in an attempt to enter a second time but was caught by the victims and held until police arrived. When police arrived, they found Evans' young child in her locked car with all the windows up. Police got the child out of the vehicle.Police later located the stolen purse and wallet and other items that were taken.The victims spoke to the court concerning what happened and addressed most of their remarks to Evans. They told the court that they had to purchase new security doors and windows for their home.One of the victims told Evans, "You have a choice to make." He said she could go back to drugs and end up in prison again of even die, or quit drugs and turn her life around.Evans admitted to a drug addiction problem she has had for the past two years. She said she got involved in illegal drugs when she became ill and was prescribed medication for that illness, which she claimed led to the use of illegal substances.Serfass told her, "You heard from(the victims) on how your actions impacted their life that night and continues to make them feel unsafe." He added, "I'm glad they were here and you heard them."Serfass sentenced her to serve a total of 3 to 1 day less 24 months in prison followed by 24 months of probation. She was also ordered to pay total restitution of $1,173.94, supply a DNA sample, render a total of 250 hours of community service when released on parole, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.She was given credit for 71 days already spent in jail on the charges.Her legal problems are not over. When arrested on the instant case, she was in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program. Defense attorney Adam Weaver said he expects the adult probation office to move to revoke her from it.
