Police: Trucker in crash was DUI

The driver of the tractor-trailer that crashed on Thursday morning off Route 895 in East Penn Township was driving under the influence of drugs, according to state police at the Lehighton barracks.

Limited details of the crash, which happened at 5:45 a.m. in the area of3200 Route 895, were provided in a public information release report issued by the barracks.The release's incident details state only that "Troopers responded to a report of a one-vehicle crash with injuries. Through an investigation, it was discovered that the operator was driving under the influence of drugs."Police did not release the name of the operator, who is a 36-year-old from Elysburg. He was driving a 2006 Freightliner, owned by Franzosa Trucking Inc. in Hazleton.Witnesses at the scene indicated Thursday that the rig was eastbound when the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The truck entered the right berm, where it hit and snapped off a utility pole.They said the vehicle re-entered the roadway, crossed both lanes, entered the north berm and struck another pole. It continued through heavy brush more than 100 feet off the roadway, traveled several hundred feet and came to rest on a lawn and driveway of a home.Route 895 was closed to traffic until the crash scene was cleared.
