Tribe's Scherer sets new record

Fourth-and-14, down 10 late in the fourth in quarter, is quite the pressure-packed situation.

Enter Lehighton's junior quarterback Cody Scherer.Scherer orchestrated both game-winning comeback drives to defeat a tough Fleetwood team 34-30 last Friday night to christen the Tribe's news stadium with an unforgettable victory.Scherer's strikes to Matt Strubinger and the eventual game-winner to Nick Scrinkosky showed that the first-year signal caller had ice in his veins on a steamy August evening.Scherer's late-game heroics and his school-record 315 yards passing were more than good enough for him to the earn Week 1 Times News Player of the Week award. The adage "you have some big shoes to fill" certainly applied to Scherer's situation with the Indians as he was taking over for three-year starter Tyler Cann at quarterback. It's safe to say that after Friday, Cann's cleats are on their way to being filled. From day one, Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll knew that Scherer was going to be a special player and that he was more than qualified for the starting quarterback position."We saw his ability to make plays on the field last season wherever we put him," said McCarroll. "What impressed me was how he handled the offense at the end of the game. He showed his leadership and ability to make plays with his arm and his feet. He made some mistakes, which is expected for a first-year guy, but it was the way he responded to those mistakes that revealed his true talents."To say the least, 315 yards passing and three touchdowns, along with 65 yards rushing and two touchdowns, is a spectacular debut on the grid iron at any level. For anybody out there who isn't great at mathematics, that's a total of 380 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns. For many players, it's a once in a lifetime performance, but Scherer is confident that he can always make those type of dynamic plays for his team, especially when the game is on the line."We knew we all had to play a solid game to get the win, and we were able to do that," said Scherer. "I knew I had to be a leader and make plays. That being said, last week is done and I can't think about last week. We all have to worry about getting better at what we made mistakes in and then try to get better."Lehighton lost a ton of fire power from a season ago from an 11-1 team in 1,000-yard rusher and Times News Football Player of the Year Wyatt Clements, Cann at quarterback, and a host of talented wide receivers. However, Scherer and the Tribe showed that talent along with a continued work ethic and dedication to the offseason can still equal success even after tremendous losses to graduation."Our numbers in the weight room were great all offseason and we have a lot of guys who want to continue to make this a winning program," said Scherer. "Coach McCarroll is always preaching to us to be consistent in everything we do whether that's in school or on the football field. It's all about working hard."
