Teen's art on display in Tamaqua

She's an artist well beyond her years.

One look at Kara Scully's work, and it's easy to think she's an adult. For all of her talents and refined personality, Kara, of Pine Beach, New Jersey, is just 16.Kara was recommended by Kim East, the center's mosaics instructor.Much to the delight of many, Kara's works were on full display as part of a meet and greet recently at the Tamaqua Community Art Center.A soon-to-be junior at Tom's River High School South, Kara said she believes the event went well."They liked the photography, and a lot of the other pieces," Kara said. "I try and do realism as best I can. I'm still working on it."While she fancies herself as a multimedia artist, Kara prefers to work with colored pencil and acrylic paint."Sometimes ideas just come to me when I listen to music," Kara said. "Sometimes I just think 'this will be cool' to do."Kara said she took to art at an early age, and really began focusing on it once she reached high school."It's fun to just get lost in it, and I'm having fun with it," she said. "I never want it to be a job, because then I'll get bored with it."Ever the perfectionist, Kara said there's plenty more for her to explore."I want to master more mediums, and I want to get better at doing things more overall," she said. "I want to take more pictures; I don't do that enough."Above all else, Kara said she hopes her work can inspire others with a passion for the arts, adding "I hope that they see you can do it any age."Despite her busy schedule, she continues to maintain honor roll status in her high school advanced classes.Following the opening night meet and greet, Kara's work will continue to be on display in the gallery until Aug. 25.
