Jim Thorpe has gotten another distinction from the world of fashion.

Elle Décor, the home edition of the well-known fashion magazine, recently put Jim Thorpe on its list of "40 of the Best Small Town Vacation Spots."The distinction comes just after Macy's held a photo shoot in the borough's downtown.The magazine recognized the area for the Old World feel of the downtown, as well as the natural beauty and recreational opportunities."Those rolling hills? That charming architecture? There's a reason this town is known as the 'Switzerland of Pennsylvania,' " the article says.The list included destinations such as Corning, New York, located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Wine Region, and Lanesboro, Minnesota, known as the bed-and-breakfast capital of that state.Local business owners like Shelli Holland of Horizons, located just off Broadway, said reviews help raise awareness of all the town has to offer.Holland said it was some of the same characteristics mentioned on the list - history, the outdoors and recreation - that drew her here."Why Jim Thorpe? Because of the history, the buildings, the Lehigh River, the gorgeous mountains here. Everything around us, from the lake to the river, the mountains and the awesome hiking trails," she said.The borough's quaint shops are also a big draw.Holland recalled how, as a teenager growing up in Palmerton, she would travel to Jim Thorpe with her girlfriend to go to stores like the Emporium of Curious Goods."There's something for everyone, if you're into the outdoors, you like to shop, or you like great food," she said.
