Palmerton man faces charges in crime spree

A Palmerton man who served prison time in the death of his 11-month-old child now faces multiple charges for an alleged crime spree in Northampton County.

Jacob Taschler, 40, of the 800 block of Edgemont Avenue, was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Robert Hawke of Walnutport on three felony counts of criminal trespass; two felony counts of burglary; two felony counts each of theft and receiving stolen property; as well as single misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Matthew Enstrom of the Lehigh Township Police Department:At 9 a.m. Nov. 14, a resident in the 3800 block of North Dogwood Road, Danielsville, reported to township police that a man came into her residence.After she confronted the man, he fled. Police searched the area but could not find him.Taschler is the main suspect in several crimes that were committed in the area of the resident's home after he fled from police in Palmerton and crashed his car at the intersections of Route 946 and Olive Road.Taschler is suspected of breaking into two houses, as well as entering the aforementioned resident's house.Taschler is also the suspect in a motor vehicle theft at the Blue Star Gas Station, 3751 Lehigh Drive, where a blue 2010 Subaru Impreza Outback was taken while parked at the gas pumps.On Nov. 16, Enstrom met with the resident at the township police station, who was able to identify Taschler in a photo lineup.In another break-in on Nov. 15, Taschler entered a garage and took a bottle of Honest Ice Tea from the refrigerator. The victim in that incident met with police and showed them a flannel jacket and car keys he found inside the jacket were in his house. The victim also said he found a tire iron inside his house. The car keys and tire iron were identified as property taken from the victim's garage on Nov. 14 after the victim said he left to go hunting and forgot to close the garage door.In another break-in on Nov. 14, Taschler took a large amount of jewelry in excess of $10,600, clothing to include a gray Walt Disney sweatshirt with Mickey Mouse on the front, and $100, leaving a green sweatshirt behind. The sweatshirt and several items to include an Honest Ice Tea bottle from inside the residence were taken for processing of latent prints and DNA.Thirty minutes later, a woman reported her blue 2010 Subaru was stolen from the Blue Start Convenient Mart. The woman said she left her vehicle running while she went inside to pay for her gas.When the victim came outside, her vehicle was gone. The victim said she saw a strange-looking man outside. Video surveillance from inside the store identified Taschler being inside the store minutes before the victim's car was stolen.Taschler is seen in the video wearing a gray Walt Disney sweatshirt with Mickey Mouse on the front, the sweatshirt believed to be the one he stole from the other residence.On Nov. 17, township police Chief Scott Fogel was contacted by Northampton County 911 concerning the stolen Subaru. The information sent to Fogel was that the car was recovered by the Virginia State Police in Richmond, Virginia.Fogel spoke to a trooper from Virginia State Police, who told him that Taschler was arrested after a high speed pursuit on Interstate 95. Taschler eventually crashed into a tree after getting off I-95. He was taken into custody and will be charged with offenses in Virginia from the vehicle pursuit.Taschler admitted to the burglary, as well as to taking the Subaru from the Blue Star Convenient Mart.The trooper charged Taschler with fleeing and eluding police, larceny of a vehicle and damage to government property.Taschler is tentatively scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Aug. 17 before Hawke.He remains in Carbon County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail straight.In 2012, Taschler, 36, pleaded to one count of endangering the welfare of a child, felony three. He was sentenced to a jail term.Jacob and Kimberly Ann Taschler were charged in May 2010 in connection with the death of their daughter, 11-month-old Kayla Marie Taschler.The two were charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.Troopers said on the night of the victim's death, Kimberly Taschler strapped the child into a car seat and left her on the floor of an upstairs bedroom. The child was then left unattended for at least 16 hours without either parent checking on the child's welfare or providing food or fluids.Troopers said during this period of time the parents smoked marijuana.
