Garden tractor pull, bike giveaway highlight fair

Tuesday was Children's Day at the Carbon County Fair, drawing people to the garden tractor pull and the bicycle giveaway.

The Garden Tractor Pull took place at 6 p.m. in the small arena and was free to attend."I love watching the kids, seeing them in action," said Martha Moyer, who sang at the fair.There were four classes: kids class for ages 5 to 12 on lawn mowers, factory stock class, wind cylinder, and open modified.Mark Goodhile, sled operator, was in charge of the event.Blake Green, 5, of Hometown was doing it for the first time."I'm really excited," he said. His grandfather had bought him one of the tractors he was pulling. He was pulling his sister's tractor as well.Both were Cub Cadets.The bicycle giveaway in the children's area in memory of Michael Muniz drew a large crowd of anxious children and parents waiting to see if they had won.There were three different age groups, 0-3, 4-8, and 9-12, and each had a boy and girl winner of a bike. One ticket per child was given and to win the child needed to be present. A Nintendo was also given away for a child up to 12 years of age.Poultry returnsPoultry were also brought back to the fair, after a state ban was issued last year because of avian flu.Five 4-H members are displaying about 26 chickens and ducks.Kristin Simmons, who is in charge of poultry at the fair, saida lot of people found out about the state's decision too late to prepare poultry for the fair."They were so disappointed last year," Simmons said.She said last year when they couldn't enter poultry they took another project, including beef, or sold their poultry privately, auctioned or kept them."They're all so excited," said Simmons, "On the bird market they may only get sold for $5 or $6, but here they may go for $50 or $100."Tacos and moreTuesday's fair also drew long lines for many of the food vendors, including gyros and taco stands.Brittany Fronheiser of Palmerton said her favorite is lamb gyros. "I'm obsessed with them," Fronheiser said.Geaker's Tacos also brought their new "Gator Taco" to the fair.Geakers started the Gator Taco in November in their Bethlehem restaurant to test it."Ever since carnival season started, we've used over 500 pounds of alligator meat," said Jared Geake, one of the owners.Every year, the family takes a trip to Florida in October. When they were there this year, Geake was looking for an idea."There's plenty of alligator down there," said Jared.Geakers now partners with a farm in Georgia, which ships the meat right to them. Geakers also has a new jerk sauce from Lancaster."The jerk sauce with the gator is a perfect combo," said Geake said.
