Carbon County is gearing up for the annual county fair, which will open on Aug. 8.

One of the highlights of the events is the 4-H exhibits, which range from crafts to steer and everything in between.On Thursday, three members of the Carbon County 4-H Livestock Club presented the county commissioners with letters asking them to support the annual 4-H Livestock Auction, slated for 1 p.m. on Aug. 13 at the Carbon County Fair.Chelsea Eckhart, who will show two dairy beef steer, three ducks and six chickens; Alyssa Myers, who will show one dairy beef steer and three ducks; and Myers' sister, Morgan, who will join the 4-H family next year when she is old enough, were proud of the club and wanted to make sure the commissioners were there for support.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein, who has actively supported the Carbon County 4-H program for years and has purchased numerous animals during past auctions, said he is looking forward to the upcoming event."It's for the kids," Nothstein said of the auction as he commended the boys and girls who participate in the fair."This is what it is all about," he said as he held up a photo of a child hugging a rabbit. "Last year I bought a pen of three rabbits. I don't think there was a buyback for the rabbits so I had a choice of keeping the rabbits, bringing them into the office or giving them back to the child."Nothstein chose to give them back and the photo he held was taken by the child's mother showing just what the animals meant to the 4-H'ers.Nothstein urged people and businesses to attend this year's auction and support the kids."You don't have to spend a fortune," he said, noting that the price goes off the market price, "but it's something to see these little kids showing steer and hogs and goats and these kids handling animals in the arena."Get out and support them."Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard also thanked the volunteers who give their time to help the children in the 4-H program.He said he looks forward to the fair to see the exhibits and the youth groups working together.
