Police: Improper passing, speed led to crash

In a split second, a Hazleton family's lives changed forever Friday.

Just before 4 p.m., Ana Iris Luna Hernandez, 36; her daughter, Allejandra Luna, 18; and two children, ages 6 and 9, were driving southbound toward Nesquehoning along Route 93 when Luna Hernandez attempted to pass another vehicle near the Packer Township line.Nesquehoning police report that witnesses said another vehicle traveling northbound was approaching and Luna Hernandez didn't have time to pass.As she tried to cut back into the southbound lane to avoid a head-on collision, Luna Hernandez lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, veering off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, police said."What we could see was the car into the tree," passer-by Sheila Valdez of Lansford said of the wreck. "We didn't see the people inside. One man behind my car walked down to see what was going on, and when he returned he told my son and myself that there was a kid lying on the road screaming 'help me' and the rest were in the car."After that I was very shook up. My deepest prayers and sympathies are with those poor people," she said.Luna Hernandez and her daughter, Allejandra, were pronounced dead at the scene by Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller.Route 93 was shut down in both directions while emergency crews from Nesquehoning, Hauto and New Columbus fire departments, as well as Packer Township and Nesquehoning police worked at the scene.Fire police from Nesquehoning, Hauto, New Columbus and Weatherly provided traffic control, and Lehighton Ambulance also responded. One child had to be extricated from the vehicle and both were flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest for their injuries. The road reopened to traffic at 7:11 p.m.Nesquehoning police believe improper passing and speed were factors in the crash and said there was no licensed driver in the vehicle as Luna Hernandez only had a learner's permit.
