Group's Poker Run to raise funds for Lansford Pool

As a kid, Sherry Shellhammer spent summers at the Lansford Pool. As an adult, she continued the tradition with her grandchildren, and eventually took a position as an assistant manager.

Like many residents and former residents of the borough, she said she’s feeling the void left since the pool was closed for maintenance.“With working there and going for so long, you develop friendships with the children and adults that attend on a regular basis,” she said.Shellhammer is part of a group hoping to raise money toward renovating and reopening the facility. The Friends of the Lansford Pool are hoping to make a big splash with their first fundraiser, a motorcycle Poker Run and festival coming up Saturday. The festival includes something for everyone. For kids, there will be a moon bounce, face painting and other games. For everyone else, there will food, vendors and a basket raffle featuring more than 120 different baskets available. In addition to baskets, attendees can bid on a week’s stay in either Avalon, New Jersey, or Mauch Chunk Lake; a two-person inflatable kayak; and other prizes.“It’s a huge number of baskets, and I appreciate everyone who’s gone the extra mile to do this for us,” she said.Shellhammer said the idea for the Poker Run came from her boyfriend, John Zwiesdak, who enjoys riding Harleys. It has garnered support from bikers as far away as Berks County.Bikers will travel about 100 miles, traversing the mountains and valleys of greater Carbon County on the picturesque route.Registration begins at 9 a.m. Kickstands up for the event is 11 a.m.The rain date for the event is Sunday.“We have bikers coming from Allentown, Reading just to support the pool so these kids can get back to enjoying it in the summertime,” she said.
