Cordova leads NV

Ben Cordova didn't have to cut his vacation short.

But he did.Instead of enjoying more time at the beach in Ocean City, Maryland, the Northern Valley pitcher returned home to give his team a helping hand.Cordova tossed a three-hit shutout as the Chargers rolled to an 11-0 Lehigh Valley Legion win over the Carbon Monarchs Thursday."It's coming down to the last couple of games of the year where every game counts," said Cordova. "It's a situation where we have to win one, if not both, of these last two to get a better seeding for playoffs. So, we were all really looking to get one here."I told coach I was going on vacation on Monday ... I told him, 'I know we need to get a win down the stretch. So, I will come back up here for whatever game you need me.' It was nice to come back. It was worth the trip back up to get a win against this team."Cordova faced the Monarchs (6-10) earlier this season. In that contest, which was on the Lehighton field he played his high school ball, the right-hander was hit hard and left the game after just one and one-third innings. But on Thursday he struck out four batters and received plenty of offensive support."Cordova pitched probably the best game that I have seen him pitch all year," Northern Valley head coach Brad Rauch said. "He pitched against them the last time we played them and they rocked him. He gave up 12 runs."But last time, he was a little juiced up - probably because he played high school with these guys. It was nice to see him come out today and pitch against a baseball team rather than a bunch of guys he knew."If Cordova was 'juiced up' Thursday, it was because his teammates gave him an early lead, and continued to pile up runs the rest of the way."We're a team with so much potential in the lineup," Cordova said. "We have power and the ability to put the ball in play. Coming from a pitcher's standpoint, it's 100 percent better pitching with a lead and having a potent offense behind you."Northern Valley leadoff hitter Niko Fager laced a double to start things off in the home first. Four pitches later, Josh Williamson belted a homer over the left-field fence. In the third, Cordova helped himself out with an RBI single. Tyler Wiik then added a two-run home run to extend the lead. The Chargers (9-8) put the game away in the fourth with six more runs. Fager recorded an RBI double, and John Taylor and Wiik added run-scoring singles. Later in the frame, Evan Meixsell blasted a bases-loaded triple."Baseball is a funny game," Monarchs coach Donnie Rehrig said. "You never expect that you're going to do the same thing that you did the first time against a team. I felt confident coming in the way we played them the first time. It was a different outcome obviously tonight. It's disappointing. It's frustrating that you're fighting for a playoff spot and you lose 11-0. It's just not good baseball."DESTINY IN THEIR OWN HANDS ... The Monarchs need to win against Southern Lehigh tonight to make the league playoffs.ALL CHARGED UP ... Every single Charger collected a hit in the game. Fager (two doubles, two runs scored, RBI), Josh Williamson (single, home run, two runs scored, two RBIs) and Tyler Wiik (single, home run, two runs scored, three RBIs) paced the winners.LEFT STRANDED ... The Monarchs managed to get runners in scoring position, doing so in the first four innings, but Cordova left them stranded. Cordova closed out the game with a 1-2-3 fifth inning.C.
