Man admits to indecent assault of teen girl at miners' museum

A Carbon County man admitted to one count each of indecent assault and sexual assault by a volunteer or employee of a nonprofit organization, admitting having inappropriate contact with a young teen at a county miners' museum.

The second count is a felony three, while the first is a misdemeanor two.Israel A. Gonzalez, 50, of Lansford, who resided in Coaldale at the time of the incident, entered his plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika. In exchange for the plea, the district attorney's office dropped counts of aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Lansford Sgt. Jack Soberick, a then 16-year-old girl and her mother told police that the girl had been sexually assaulted by a man at the No. 9 Mine and Museum, a popular tourist attraction in Lansford, on July 20, 2015.The girl was interviewed by staff at the Children's Advocacy Center in Scranton, on Aug. 26. She told them she was working as a volunteer and that Gonzalez was in charge of the mine museum. The assault began, she said, as she was on a ladder putting items on a shelf in an isolated area, and continued after she came down.Gonzalez was interviewed on Oct. 3 by officer Jeff Tanner. He told Tanner the girl had a panic attack while on the ladder and that he had checked her heart rate with his hands. However, yesterday he admitted he made inappropriate contact with the girl of a sexual nature.Because the charge falls under the provisions of Megan's Law Gonzalez, who is wheelchair bound, must undergo an evaluation by the state sexual offenders assessment board which will determine if he is a sexual violent predator. If it is determined that he is, then he must register for life as a sexual offender. If not, the registration period is 15 years.Matika also ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
