A Jim Thorpe man admitted in Carbon County court on Thursday to driving drunk with his young son in the vehicle with the presiding judge stating, "This type of thing is happening too often."

Michael Vincent Bocina, 25, pleaded to one count each of driving under the influence, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a controlled substance and was immediately sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of six to 23 months in the county prison.Bocina was arrested on April 23 by Franklin Township Police who responded to an accident along Long Run Road.On scene, police learned that Bocina was the driver of the vehicle in the crash and that he was under the influence of a controlled substance. Police also found his 18-month-old son in the back seat. Bocina admitted using heroin prior to the crash.Bocina admitted to an addiction problem and claimed he has applied for the inpatient program run by the Salvation Army.Serfass said his court has had too many of these types of cases in which a person is driving under the influence with young children in the vehicle.He said, "Almost all plea lists" have such cases, asking Bocina, "What were you thinking?"Bocina said he was not thinking and said that is why he is seeking help. He further claimed he was approved for the Salvation Army program at Wilkes-Barre and is awaiting a bed date.On the endangering charge, Serfass imposed the six to 23-month term and 72 hours to 60 months on the DUI charge, with the terms running concurrently. Bocina was given credit for 54 days spent in prison on the counts. On the drug count he was placed on probation for a year concurrent with the other charges.Bocina was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months, render a total of 250 hours of community service when released on parole, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole. He is an inmate in the prison on the charges.
