Palmerton rallies around coach hurt in crash

The Palmerton community is showing their appreciation for longtime volunteer Eugene "Gino" Roberts.

"He's such a great community man," said Tammy Quinn, the manager of Subway in Palmerton. "He always has a smile on his face."Subway and Country Harvest are among the business fundraising to help Roberts with the medical expenses. On June 4, he was on his way to his granddaughter's basketball game when he crashed into a tree near Bath, his wife Cindy Roberts said. The steering wheel pushed into his chest breaking two ribs. He also suffered two broken femurs and a fractured hip. He remains in the hospital undergoing rehabilitation.Gino Roberts is known throughout the Palmerton community for his years of coaching a variety of youth sports.Quinn said he and his friend the late Terry Balliet organized a summer basketball camp for children every year. They often came into the restaurant and welcomed other customers as they came in."We call (Roberts) the Subway greeter," Quinn said. This involvement in coaching is even more impressive because Roberts has had diabetes for about 35 years, resulting in the amputation of both his legs.On Thursday, a portion of the Subway sales from noon to 7 p.m. went to the fundraiser for Roberts. Quinn said the hours for the Dining to Donate night covered both the lunch and dinner rush. There was also a donation jar set out for Roberts. By 2:30 p.m., Subway had to empty the jar three times."It wasn't just dollars," Quinn said. "People put in $5s and $20s. We did quite well."Cindy Roberts said she is amazed by the outpouring of support from the community and offers to help."I can't even believe it," she said. "It makes me want to cry to have such good friends."Jean Hahn, the bakery manager at Country Harvest, is organizing a fundraiser on Sunday to benefit the Roberts family. Cindy Roberts is one of her co-workers.The fundraiser will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, hot dogs and drinks, as well as a gift certificates raffle and basket raffle. The basket themes include: snack, wine, barbeque, children's items, summer fun time and a lottery basket. The gift certificates have been donated by Palmerton Pizza, Hager Furniture for a carpet cleaning and Country Inn and Suites by Carlton with a two-hour pool pass for a pool party."We've gotten two donations already from people who can't be here on Sunday," Hahn said.In addition to the fundraiser at Country Harvest, the Palmerton Football Booster Club is selling T-shirts at the high school football field from 10 to 11 a.m. Sunday, she said. The shirts cost $10 each and $4 will go to the fundraiser for Roberts. He also helps coach football, Hahn said.In fact, he doesn't intend to miss football camp.Cindy Roberts said her husband told her, "One way or another, I will be at the football camp on July 11."He is supposed to get out of the hospital next Tuesday, she said."He has been coaching children for years and years," she said. "He loves to coach the kids."A GoFundMe site has also been set up for Roberts by Laura Konze."He's fun-loving, friendly and extremely family-oriented" Konze said on the website."From basketball, to baseball, to football, and seemingly everything else in between, Gino's fingerprints are everywhere in the community where he was born and raised. This man has done everything for our community and has asked for nothing in return."
