Expect delays on turnpike this week

Motorists on the northeastern extension of Interstate 476 should be prepared for single-lane traffic patterns and two-way traffic in the Lehigh Tunnel from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 20, 21, 22 and 23 for tunnel maintenance and updating overhead lighting.

Each day between 7:30 and 8 a.m., crews will stop traffic for no more than 15 minutes in both directions to establish a crossover.Crews will direct all traffic into the northbound tunnel.By 8 a.m., the southbound tunnel will be closed, and all traffic will be diverted into the northbound tunnel until 2 p.m., when the patterns are lifted.The Lehigh Tunnel is at milepost 70-71 between Lehigh Valley, Exit 56, and Mahoning Valley, Exit 74.Motorists traveling on I-476 should stay alert and turn on headlights when entering the tunnel.They should slow down, keep an adequate distance from the vehicle ahead, and never pass inside the tunnel.Anyone who experiences car trouble and cannot safely exit the tunnel should stay in the car, put on hazard lights and wait for assistance.Tunnel personnel will monitor by closed-circuit cameras and send help for disabled vehicles.Message boards will be activated to update motorists of any changes to the schedule caused by inclement weather or unforeseen traffic conditions.
