Carbon man threatened to make 'Orlando look small'

A former Lansford man faces charges on terroristic threats after he told state police he was going to make the “Orlando, Florida, attack look small.”

John R. Large, 51, was taken into custody on Wednesday in Orange County, Vermont, one day after he is accused of calling in a bomb threat to both the home and office of a Carbon County attorney.Large also faces charges for separate incidents that occurred on Sunday and Monday.SundayLarge faces charges for threatening his ex-wife on Sunday.For that incident, he faces charges of terrorist threats, harassment, and not having permits from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Pennsylvania Game Commission.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Joseph Wood of the Pennsylvania State Police:At 4:43 p.m. Large’s ex-wife contacted state police at Lehighton about a dead crow and copperhead snake that were dumped in her driveway.Pieces of paper were under the snake and in the mouth of the crow.The notes read, “Don’t be a snake in the grasssssss or dinner will be crow” and “don’t (expletive) up!”Notes also made references to her parents. Another said, “Tell them to dig a (expletive) hole and pick out a (expletive) coffin.”The woman said these notes were left by Large in regard to a visitation with their daughter.Also that day, Large sent text messages to his son in which he threatened his ex-wife, who is his son’s mother.On June 3, the victim was granted an emergency protection from abuse order by District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.MondayLarge also faces charges for an incident on Monday in which he threatened state police with a reference to the Orlando, Florida, attack.For that incident, he faces charges on one count each of terrorism, terroristic threats and harassment.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Shaun Flynn of the state police:At 1 p.m. Large called state police at Lehighton, identified himself, and spoke to the crime unit supervisor, Cpl. William Gross, in regard to another incident that had occurred with his ex-wife over the weekend, the affidavit says.Large became increasingly agitated, yelling obscenities and threatened the safety of Gross and the safety of all of the personnel at the Lehighton station.He then hung up and called state police at Lehighton again at 7:49 p.m. and spoke with Cpl. Shawn Noonan requesting “who he spoke to earlier in the day and wanted to do recon on that trooper and that trooper has no idea who the (expletive) he is dealing with.”Large then called back at 8:25 p.m. and spoke to Noonan again, saying that he knows that there are multiple active warrants for him and that he wasn’t going back to jail, and he has been preparing for this for six months.He also said not to bother putting more troopers on the road to look for him this weekend “because this is all going down this weekend” and police will have no idea where the (expletive) he is coming from.Large also said that he is going to make the Orlando, Florida, terrorist attack look small.He said he is an engineer, and that police have no idea “what the hell he is capable of doing.”TuesdayOn Tuesday, Large called in a bomb threat to both the home and office of Palmerton attorney Gerald Strubinger Jr.Palmerton Borough police Chief Randy Smith said that at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, Large called in a bomb threat to Strubinger Law Office by Large.Smith said the building was evacuated, searched and an explosive-detecting dog from South Whitehall Township was called and did a search of the building. No bomb was found, he said.Strubinger’s home was also threatened.According to court records. Strubinger represented Large’s ex-wife in a custody hearing.His arrestOn Tuesday, Vermont State Police were notified that Large was possibly in the state.A joint investigation between Vermont State Police and the Pennsylvania State Police showed that Large was staying at an acquaintance’s residence in Washington, Vermont.Vermont State Police located Large at the acquaintance’s residence at 185 Turnpike Road, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.The Vermont State Police Tactical Support Unit and the Crisis Negotiations Unit were called and removed the owners of the residence without incident.Large was later taken into custody after he left the residence.He was scheduled to be arraigned at the Orange County District Court on Wednesday.Large is charged as a fugitive from justice, along with the other charges in Pennsylvania.Prior incidents:John R. Large has a history of threatening people.

• Dec. 21, 2015: Colonial Regional Police charged Large with threatening a Northampton County judge with early morning phone calls.

• October 2015: Large was charged with terroristic threats and harassment for threatening a woman by phone.

• In 2014, he was charged with planting a fake bomb on June 14 near the car of a Nesquehoning woman he had been harassing.

• Several years ago, Large was charged with stalking the late Carbon County Judge David W. Addy over three days.

Addy had presided over an earlier custody hearing involving Large.

Large confronted Addy in the courthouse, and showed up at the judge’s house, threatening to kill him. Addy locked himself and his family inside and called 911.

A neighbor testified that Large repeatedly threatened to kill the judge.
