Fire destroys converted schoolhouse

A fire that destroyed an old schoolhouse in Lynn Township was caused by a lawnmower, according to Lynnport Fire Chief Clark Mantz.

Firefighters from Lehigh and Berks counties battled the stubborn house fire Sundayat 8942 Steinsville Road, Lynn Township.The fire broke out around 8 p.m. in a two-room schoolhouse, built in the 1800s, which was converted into a home.Mantz said the owner Philip Martin mowed the grass and put away the warm mower away in a storage trailer behind the house. The fire started in the trailer and spread to the house, according to neighbors.More than 100 firefighters were on scene Sunday, according to Mantz."Winds were out of control at 40 to 50 mph. That didn't help anything," Mantz said.The fire already had a good start before we got there."Fire companies on scene included Weisenberg, Schnecksville, Neffs, Lynnport, New Tripoli, Germansville, Virginville and Kempton.Cetronia Ambulance brought its rehab truck and ambulance.The American Red Cross Lehigh Valley-Bucks Chapter came to the scene to help as needed.Crews were called out again Monday morning when the fire rekindled..Lehigh Valley Press
