Two new board members took their seats on the Lehighton Area School District’s board of directors Monday night.

After accepting the resignations of Byron Arner and Marianne Dwyer, the board unanimously appointed Duane Eidem and Stacey Duerst to fill the positions.Both Eidem and Duerst interviewed in front of the board and made their case to Carbon County Judge Roger Nanovic earlier this year when a seat was vacated due to the passing of William Hill.“Having gone through both of those processes, I think they are appropriate candidates for the board,” said board member David Krause.Eidem previously served on the board from 2001-05 and 2007-11, including a stint as president.During the hearing in front of Nanovic, Eidem said he wanted to help the district move forward again.“My previous board experience, which includes contract negotiations, helps me to know the ins and outs of the district,” he said.Duerst, meanwhile, has spent numerous hours volunteering for the district including her role as Franklin Township Elementary Parent Teacher Organization president.During her previous interview for a board seat, she said her background in corporate research and volunteer experience gives her a unique set of skills for the position.In advocating for a new elementary center, she said it would “allow the district to increase services and programs to the students who are most at need.”On Monday, Eidem was named to the district’s negotiations and personnel, and legislative committees.Duerst will serve on the finance committee and be the district’s liaison to the Lehighton Memorial Library.Both were sworn in during Monday’s meeting and will serve through December 2017 before they would need to be re-elected.
