Farmers market voucher program for senior citizens begins

The Senior Farmers Market Program will be offered again this year to eligible senior citizens age 60 and over.

This program is made possible through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Food Distribution.Residents are eligible if they are 60 years of age or older. The income guidelines for program participation are set by the federal government. In 2016, the eligibility limit is $21,978 for a single person, and $29,637 for a married couple.Those who qualify will receive four $5 vouchers for a total purchase of $20 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables purchases at approved farmers markets. The produce must be "grown or growable" in Pennsylvania. A driver's license or photo license would be sufficient to meet the age/residency requirements.Vouchers are provided on a first-come, first-served basisIf you cannot go to the distribution sites, a representative can pick up the vouchers for you as long as the representative brings a completed proxy form signed by you. A proxy form is needed for those picking up for their spouse as well.Schuylkill CountyRep. Jerry Knowles, R-Berks/Carbon/Schuylkill, said that Diakon Community Services, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, will distribute fruit and vegetable vouchers to those who qualify, beginning Thursday, June 9.Vouchers will be distributed as follows:• June 14: Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., Tamaqua, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.• June 28: Zion Lutheran Church, 4th and Lewis streets, Minersville, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.• July 8: Christ United Methodist Church, 400 E. Grand Ave., Tower City, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.• July 12: McAdoo Fire Company, Grant and Hancock streets, McAdoo, from 10 a.m. to noon.Vouchers will also be available for distribution at the following senior community centers on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., beginning Thursday:• Pottsville Senior Community Center, 201 N. Centre St., Pottsville.• Schuylkill Haven Senior Community Center, 340 Haven St., Schuylkill Haven.• Mahanoy Senior Community Center, 138 W. Centre St., Mahanoy City.• Tremont Senior Community Center, 139 Clay St., Tremont.• Shenandoah Senior Community Center, 116 N.
