Dugan's no-hitter lifts Bombers

OREFIELD - She fidgets with her glove and paces around the circle.

She tosses the ball up between pitches and talks to her teammates. She shows emotion in the form of a wry smile when she misses her spot or doesn't get a call.Palmerton's Reese Dugan may often look uncomfortable during one of her outings, but in reality, the more antsy she seems to be the better she seems to pitch. On Tuesday at Parkland, Dugan was anything but uncomfortable. In fact, it was the Pen Argyl hitters who were out of sorts. The Blue Bomber hurler tossed a no-hitter, her first of the season, and struck out nine batters to lead her team to a 5-0 victory in the District 11 Class AA semifinals. The win sends seventh-seeded Palmerton (14-10) to Thursday's championship game at Blue Mountain. The Bombers will face Pine Grove, which defeated top-seeded Catasauqua."I had a lot of movement today," said Dugan, who allowed just three base runners, one on a walk and two on errors. "I just tried to keep my (pitches) fast, and tried not to get tired."I talk to everyone. I tend to talk to people instead of focusing. That kind of is my way of focusing. It keeps me calm. I do (mess with my glove). My hand gets very sweaty so I take it off a lot. My dad got me a leather glove with fur in it for the cold, but it's very hot in the summer. I also toss the ball up a lot. I feel like I do stuff like that when I'm focused or sometims when I'm nervous."Dugan's success is even more impressive considering the fact she's still bothered from a ball that hit her late in the regular season."She was hit on the pitching arm at Northern Lehigh's senior night," said Bomber head coach Bob Hock. "It was swollen for a week. We tried not to use her at all and rest it and ice it, and she responded nicely to the time off in between leagues and districts. She's throwing the ball well right now."Dugan isn't the only one playing well right now.The senior's battery mate, Alyssa Acker, is also coming up big in key situations. After blasting two homers against Tamaqua in the quarterfinal round, the Palmerton catcher delivered in the clutch again against the sixth-seeded Green Knights.Locked in a scoreless tie, Acker blasted a two-out, two-run double to left in the top of the fourth inning to give her team the lead. An error later in the frame pushed the margin to 3-0."She's been swinging a nice bat for us," said Hock. "She started out the year hitting the ball well, but then was slowed by a nasty ankle injury. That slowed her down a little. Coming back was a little tough for her, getting her timing and rhythm back, but she seems to have found it at the right time of the year. That was a big hit for us. It was 0-0 at that point, and any time you can get the lead and you have Reese out there, you start to like what's happening."The Bombers added a run in the fifth on a Jordan Boyle RBI single, and tacked on another in the seventh on Shelby Gower's sacrifice fly. After that, the only thing in doubt was whether Dugan would finish off the no-no.A throwing error allowed the first Pen Argyl batter to reach in the home seventh, but three pop-ups ended the game."I didn't know it was a no-hitter," said Dugan. "I left the ball (in the circle) and (coach) said you better go pick that up and I said, 'Why?' He said you just threw a no-hitter, you might want to save that ball.""She just pitched a great game," said Pen Argyl mentor Bill Schankel. "We just lost to a better team today. They're a senior-dominated team, and more experienced than us. It still comes down to playing the game, and they outplayed us. Sometimes you just take your hat off to the other team."HITTING STARS ... Alyssa Olewine had three hits and scored a run for Palmerton, while Boyer had a pair of hits and scored once. Gower also drilled a double down the left-field line.ERASED ... No Pen Argyl runner reached second base. The closest at doing that was courtesy runner Gianna Ianni. After Emily Due walked in the first inning, Ianni tried to steal second, but was gunned down by Acker.PITCH COUNT ... Dugan needed 23 pitches to get out of the first inning, but was more efficient after that. She used just 64 more pitches (and just seven in both the fourth and sixth frames) the rest of the way to record her gem.Palmerton 000 310 1 - 5 8 2Pen Argyl 000 000 0 - 0 0 2Dugan and Acker; Kocher and Due.
