Fire damages three apartments

Several people have been displaced from their apartments after a fire in Palmerton on Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out at 12:30 p.m. at 226-228 Delaware Ave., according to borough Fire Chief Dennis Behler.Upon arrival, Behler said firefighters encountered smoke coming from the second floor front apartment window and the west side apartment window.Behler said the fire started in one of the apartments on the second floor, and then spread through the apartment to the other side of the building up to the attic."The first floor (had) pretty good water damage," Behler said. "There are two other apartments in the back with water damage and smoke damage."He said that in two of the apartments, two occupants were home at the time the fire broke out, though no one was home in the third apartment.Behler said it took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control, though firefighters from Palmerton were at the scene for about five hours. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and which apartment it broke out in was unknown as of early this morning, he said.A state fire marshal was expected to return to the scene later today, Behler said. The structure sustained fairly severe damage in the top two apartments.PPL shut the power off to the entire building, which Behler said could be salvageable. The law offices of Anders Riegel & Masington LLC occupies the first-floor apartment at 226, and 228 houses Lisa Kuchinos Beauty Salon.Other fire departments assisting at the scene were the Aquashicola, Bowmanstown, Lehighton, Slatington and Walnutport."I think all the companies involved worked very well together with teamwork, and we made a good stop," considering the building was engulfed before crews arrived, Behler said.Papa Al's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Palmerton donated pizzas to the firefighters. The American Red Cross also met with the families, according to Michele Baehr, executive director for the American Red Cross of the Pocono Mountains."Two of our disaster action team volunteers met with the families, (and they) assisted one family with two adults and one child with the financial assistance for food, clothing, shelter and other needs," Baehr said."We left information for the other tenants who were not on scene to contact us."Baehr added, "We certainly expect that we will have further follow-up with the other tenants who were not on scene. There will certainly be further case work and assistance for all of the tenants for any of their additional needs."One of the victims, Dakota Strawcutter, set up a GoFundMe.com website: "We are a family of three. Our entire home has burned down. Everything inside, all our clothes, valuables, etc. is gone in flames. We have nothing left. Our daughter is only 6. We are trying to raise money to get into a new home ASAP and to buy some clothes and food. Anything is a great help."Another resident, Wes Reinhard, posted on Facebook about his loss and said his cat was missing.Baehr said the Red Cross is mainly run by volunteers, and encouraged anyone who would like to be a part of their disaster action team to call 610-377-2100.
