Mosey on in to the drive-in

When we think about outdoor activities, grilling, yard work and the beach tend to be among the first that spring to mind.

For whatever reason, it seems as if over the years, taking the family to the drive-in has become somewhat of a lost art.In my opinion, viewing a cinematic production on a large outdoor screen is unlike any other movie-watching experience.Picture the setup: a large outdoor screen, projection booth, concession stand, and cars parked next to each other in rows under a dark sky. These days, I semi-regularly pass the Mahoning Drive-In Theater along Seneca Drive in Mahoning Township on my way to and from work, or while on assignment.Doing so sometimes makes me feel nostalgic, as it takes me back to my teenage years when I lived but only a hop, skip and a jump away from the drive-in.Having formerly resided in the township many years ago, there were times where it was commonplace for us to take in several movies a year.To this day, I can still recall going to see "Kindergarten Cop" and "Home Alone," among others.Though I admittedly haven't seen any movies at the drive-in recently, every so often the thought enters my mind.I always tell myself my wife and I ought to do so one of these nights.Aside from the one in Mahoning, we're fortunate in that we live within proximity to several other drive-ins.There's also Becky's Drive-In located in Walnutport, as well as Shankweiler's Drive-In Theatre in Orefield. From a cost standpoint, drive-ins are affordable, and cost less than a trip to the movie theater. That's absolutely no knock on movie theaters, as they are special in their own right. My wife and I have taken in several movies over the past few months, some good, and others, not so much.Much like the movie theater, drive-ins can also be a great way for families to spend the weekend. What's great about the drive-in is that in some instances, you'll actually get to see more than one movie. On top of that, you actually get to choose what treats you want, rather than the customary popcorn, nachos with cheese and candy. Some recommended items to take along would likely include food and drink, plenty of pillows and blankets, lawn chairs to sit in, and a radio to hear the movie. To further enhance their experience, those who choose to sit outside their car to watch the movie may want to bring along a portable radio to ensure better sound. Not only are drive-ins fun and affordable; for some of us, they're right in our very own backyard.
