Road repair project to cost Walker Township $100K

It could cost Walker Township up to $100,000 to complete this year's road program projects.

On a unanimous vote, the township's board of supervisors on Thursday agreed to award a contract to Barletta Materials & Construction, Tamaqua, at an amount not to exceed $100,000.The project would complete all of the base repair on Valley, Catawissa and Shady Lane, according to correspondence sent from David Horst of Alfred Benesch & Company, the township's engineer.Horst said Barletta, the low bidder, was one of two companies to submit bids to the township online.Barletta's base bid was $83,029, while its alternate was $25,485, which would have pushed the total to $108,514, he said.Since the township did not bid the project with prevailing wages, Horst noted it cannot award an amount greater than $100,000.However, he said the township could award the base bid, and part of the alternate.Supervisor Craig Wagner said last month that the township would use money from its liquid fuels and general fund accounts for the project.Wagner said at that time the work would then be done during the summer.
