Schuylkill OKs contract for jail health care

Schuylkill County commissioners on Thursday approved a five-year contract with PrimeCare Medical Inc. of Harrisburg to provide health care at the county jail.

The contract runs from May 1 through April 30, 2021. The monthly fee is $78,760, with annual increases based on the Consumer Price Index, or 2.5 percent, whichever is lower.The per diem rate is set at $3.50, should the prison's average daily population exceed 277 inmates in any given month.Faced with skyrocketing medical costs, the county hired PrimeCare on a five-year contract in April 2006 at about $450,000 a year.In other matters, commissioners approved hiring former Rush Township police officer Thomas R. Fort as a lieutenant correctional officer at the county prison at $53,390 a year.They also accepted the resignation of Clerk of Courts per diem clerk Janelle Phillips from her $11.34 an hour job.The county Salary Board has temporarily eliminated the position.Also on Thursday, commissioners issued a proclamation honoring Schuylkill Haven School District senior David Zimmerman.Zimmerman won the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award.He also served as a leader in the recent Schuylkill Keep It Pretty (SKIP) annual cleanup.Zimmerman was presented with the SKIP Dr. Harry A. and Mary Jo Crosswell Environmental Citizenship Scholarship award.Commissioners also proclaimed 2016 as the start of the "5 Facts Campaign," a public campaign to increase awareness and response to drug abuse, depression, bullying and sexual violence.
