Woman who hurt her newborn gets jail

A Carbon County woman who assaulted her newborn child was sentenced to a county prison term on Thursday.

Ashley Orach, 28, of Summit Hill, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve seven to one day less 12 months in the county prison on a charge of aggravated assault. She previously pleaded to the count.According to Summit Hill Police Chief Joseph Fittos, officers were dispatched to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale on June 1, 2015, after hospital officials reported a suspected child abuse case in the emergency room. An investigation determined that Orach had assaulted her 5-week-old son.Matika said Orach denied the incident when being interviewed for a presentence investigation report being prepared by the adult probation office. Defense attorney Paul Levy, of the public defenders' office, said his client has learning disabilities and limitations. He said she admits assaulting the child and was remorseful for it.Orach told Matika, "I'm sorry I hit the kid."Matika said if Orach's mother hadn't intervened the day of the incident the situation could have been much worse. Matika also said the court was concerned about appropriate actions by the defendant in the future.Levy asked Matika to permit Orach to serve the term in 28-day increments so she could keep her Social Security benefits, but that was denied.Matika also ordered Orach to get a mental health evaluation, supply a DNA sample, render 75 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole, and have no unsupervised contact with her son.She began the jail term immediately.
