Washington fire companies receive township donations

The three fire companies in Washington Township requested the annual donations they receive from the township.

Friedens Fire Company of Friedens, Citizens Fire Company of Slatedale and Star Hose Company of Emerald each received a $5,000 donation and $20,000 toward their truck fund.The resignation of Wes Beltz was approved pending receipt of a written notice. He said he is unable to be on the Northern Lehigh Recreation Board. Shawn Andrews was appointed to the position.The Barbara Scheirer preliminary-final plan at 4019 Friedens Road in a rural village zone received a waiver for the scale of the map. It received conditional approval on April 5 with the conditions as listed in the engineer's letter.The Hausaman farm plan for 470 Washington St. was approved.A letter was received from the Slatington Library for the township's "generous" gift of $1,000.The fire police were approved to help celebrate Trexlertown Goodwill Fire Company's 100th anniversary on July 16.Jason Breidinger, representing the Northern Valley Ambulance Association, told supervisors there were some changes in its management. Fundraisers are planned including the annual Roundup.Mark Smith, as Weisenberg Township advocate, said the township appreciates having service 24 hours a day. He said it has benefited Washington as well."Let us know if there are any issues," he said.The Veterans Affairs office requested that disabled veteran Rick Walters be excused from paying real estate tax. It was approved.Though the tax collector previously kept money in his own name, he or Sally Mantz can now sign the checks and they go into the general fund.Friedens fire chief Joel Merkel said the playground association wants to run a water line from the firehouse to the playing fields. Solicitor John Ashley told him to draw up a written request specifying things such as if the drain field is damaged the association will be responsible. Merkel said the fire company just spent a lot of money improving the drain field. Because of the drought the fire company has first call on available water. They have talked with zoning officer Todd Weidman.Sherry Graver, emergency management coordinator, said people have been calling the Red Cross about the smoke detector program, which will begin the week of April 30.There have been preliminary discussions about the county receiving reimbursement for some of the expenses connected with the major snowstorm.Ed Ziegler said it was 10 years since Rob Berger took over the Ziegler trash collection business.He told Breidinger that NOVA has been doing very good work.
