Keer hits for cycle in Colts win

It wasn't Danny Keer's birthday Wednesday, but the junior celebrated like it was for the Marian baseball team.

Keer came within a single of doing one of the hardest feats in the game of baseball - hitting for the cycle. Keer blasted away for a double, triple and a home run and accounted for four RBIs as the Colts roared past visiting Mahanoy Area, 13-0."He's only a junior and he's starting to come into his own," said second year Marian manager Tony Radocha. "He might be our best hitter right now. Obviously he's having a hot spring. I hope he stays that way."So too are the Colts, as they improved to 6-0 on the year, and 2-0 in Schuylkill Baseball League Division III play. They needed just five-and-a-half innings to dispatch of the Golden Bears, who have yet to win a game in five tries. The big concern for the Marian skipper as of now is that the schedule has had a quirk. Marian has been playing just once a week, so the backlog could be a factor starting next week. That prompted the Marian coaching staff to employ five different pitchers yesterday, all with an inning of work."This is our only game this week, but next week we have four games," said Radocha, who hopes to guide this year's edition to a second-straight divisional title and a seat in the four-team league playoffs."Right now we're playing it like we're 0-0," he said. "We're not looking any further than our next game. It's no one's fault, it's just the way the schedule has come about. We only have one makeup game."If the Colts bang the drum as they did in the romp over the Bears, there may not need to be a worry from the pitching end. In all, Marian clubbed out 13 hits and even the 8-hole hitter Nick Kubishin was in the same company as Keer. Kubishin went perfect in three plate appearances with a double and two singles and a pair of RBIs.KJ Snerr roped a double, single and drove in a pair of runs, as the Colts had four extra-base hits. Dante Salerno and Aaron DeAngelo both singled twice to drive in a run, while Robbie Hinkle chipped in a single and scored twice.Marian slapped together a six-run first-inning outburst, sending 11 batters to the plate. Keer tripled home two runners in the rally with an opposite field hit."I just went with the pitch, and I really didn't think it had that much carry," he said.Kubishin and DeAngelo picked up RBI singles in a two-run second inning rally, and in the home fourth the Colts scored five more runs. Kubishin doubled in the rally, but the big blow came with two outs when Keer drilled his shot over the fence."It's a great way to start the season," said Radocha. "My biggest concern right now is the lack of our pitchers getting work. We needed to run all (five) out there; it's the only time they are able to get (on the mound this week). But from here on in our pitching is going to be tested."FIVE HURLERS.… The Colts sent Mason Evitts to the mound to start; followed by Kubishin, Joe Nahas, Teague Schmidt and Keer. Nahas was most impressive, throwing 12 pitches and getting three strikeouts. A twin killing in the second by the Marian defense was the start of 10 straight batters retired in order.TWO HITS ALLOWED.… Marian allowed only two hits, one each from Nathan Fegley and Mike Wronski.MAHS 000 00 - 0 2 0MCHS 620 5x - 13 13 0Hannon, Loughlin (2), Nalesnik (3) and McGroarty; Evitts, Kubishin (2), Nahas (3), Schmidt (4) , Keer (5) and Snerr and Nolter (5).
