Harmony Scholars perform this weekend

Panther Valley High School's annual "Harmony Scholars" program will take to the stage this Friday and Saturday night.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the musical spectacle that has raised thousands of dollars for local charitable endeavors. For 25 years, Panther Valley students have been putting on the production, where they lip-sync along to modern and classic hits. Senior Zachary Gilbert, who's participated in the program for four years, says in some ways the production is harder to put together than a regular singing performance."You need to have the coordination with 33 people. You have to coordinate yourself with everyone doing a certain number - it's a little more difficult than just getting ready to sing the national anthem at a football game," Gilbert said. That shows in performances like "The Circle of Life" - where the Harmony Scholars dress up as the characters from the hit "The Lion King.""It's such a big number, it almost gets you. I mean, it's called the circle of life."To mark the 25th anniversary, alumni of the Harmony Scholars will return to the stage. To celebrate, they'll bring back some of the numbers that headlined past Harmony Scholar performances, but haven't been performed in a few years, like the "12 Pains of Christmas."As usual, there's a charitable aspect to the program. The proceeds from the performance go to the American Cancer Society, as well as a scholarship in the memory of Richard Davidyock, who created the modern version of the Harmony Scholars in 1992. Locals will recall that it was actually first put on in 1954 at Summit Hill High School."It'll be something cool for us to see, and also those who participated throughout the years," Gilbert said.
