PITTSBURGH (AP) - An 80-year-old western Pennsylvania man who organized honor guard ceremonies for thousands of deceased veterans is heading to prison for stealing donations meant for American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
Patrick Gorman was sentenced Thursday to 11 ½ to 23 months in prison after he was convicted earlier this year of theft, receiving stolen property and misapplication of entrusted funds. The Baldwin man previously served as a commander of an American Legion post, where he led the group's honor guard. He took over the same role at a VFW post in 2010.Prosecutors say he diverted donations from both groups meant for honor guards at military funerals and functions and spent more than $40,000 on himself, his family and expenses that weren't approved.
