Summit Hill Borough Council held a special meeting Wednesday to beat a deadline for a grant application that could add volleyball courts to the Ginder Field playground.

The council voted 6-0 to apply for a $60,000 grant from the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.Councilman Gregory Kosciolek said if approved, the Summit Hill Recreation Commission would be able to complete a three-phase Ginder Field Rehabilitation project.Jennilee Kosciolek, a member of the recreation commission, said the project consists of updating walkways and planting trees.She said it will also allow the addition of a volleyball court, two horseshoe pits, a bocce ball alley and a natural play area."Our goal is to create a premier outdoor recreational space for area residents and groups of all ages to enjoy," she said. "Our recreation commission has been working hard applying for grants. We received the 2016 DCNR Small Communities Grant for Phase 1 of our project and are awaiting to hear about the 2016 DCED grant that we applied for last year for Phase 2."She said, "The overall rehabilitation project would be beneficial to the residents of Summit Hill and the surrounding towns."Jennilee Kosciolek said the main fundraising event for the recreation commission is its annual 5K run/walk.Council gave approval for the commission to hold the event, called the "Summit Hill Stay-at-Home 5K," on May 29.The race will start and end in Ludlow Park. Preregistration is $25 and registration the day of the race is $30. Registration begins at 7:45 am and the race begins at 9 a.m.Register online at
