Lehighton considers lease for digital billboard

A digital sign could be installed on Sergeant Stanley Hoffman Boulevard in Lehighton.

By a unanimous vote, borough council on Monday agreed to work on a lease agreement, and to execute a zoning application for the board.Council's decision came after it heard a proposal from Bill Moyer, who requested to lease a piece of borough-owned land to be used for a digital billboard for business advertising and the community.Moyer told council he would pay for all expenses associated with the installation of the billboard, such as electricity, the Internet and the costs of zoning.He said he would also create one specific slide on the board for the community."Moyer referred to the digital sign as a "great opportunity for the borough."CDBG hearingAlso on Monday, council held its first Community Development Block Grant public hearing.David Bodnar, planning director for the Carbon County Office of Planning and Development, told council that for fiscal year 2016, the borough will receive about $93,534.Of that, Bodnar said $76,698 would be for project implementation, and $16,836 would go toward administration costs.He noted that the funding amounts are approximates, as his office has not received actual amounts from the Department of Community and Economic Development as of yet.Bodnar said pre-applications are due by May 6.The borough's second public hearing is expected to be held in September, he said.Formal applications will be submitted to DCED around October or November, Bodnar said.Paving program bidsAlso on Monday, council agreed to award a bid to Asphalt Maintenance & Solutions in the amount of $54,519 for the 2016 street project for the application of a bituminous seal coat.The streets planned are as follows:• Seventh Street, from Iron to Coal• Ochre Street, from First to Fourth• 11th Street, from Hamilton to Coal• South Fourth Street, from Bridge to Alum• Alum Street, from Seventh to Ninth• Bridge Street, from East Penn to Summit Avenue• Carbon Street, from First to Third
