Heroin town hall

A town-hall meeting to discuss "Heroin-A Rural Epidemic" will be held on March 30 in the Tamaqua Middle School Auditorium.Organized by Todd Zimmerman, an adjunct professor of History at Lehigh Carbon Community College, the town hall is an effort to address the growing problem of opiate drug abuse. Guest speakers will be Dr. Rachel Levine, Pennsylvania Physician General; Gary Tennis, Pennsylvania Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs; Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas Judge James A. Goodman; and Carbon County Court of Common Pleas Judge Joseph Matika.The event will begin at 6 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend.Tamaqua seniorsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens met March 17 with 58 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session.The invocation "Spring" was offered by Ruthann Feane. Jane Tarter was added to the sick list. Two new members were welcomed, Irma Leibensperger and Wendy Perla. Birthday wishes were offered to Asenth Horann, who celebrated reaching the age of 97.Members were reminded there would not be a meeting during Holy Week and a trip to Shady Maple is scheduled for March 30.The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.The group is open to anyone 55 or older and the YMCA is handicap accessible.ESRCThe Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday. The meeting will be held at the South Ward Community Center on Penn Street.Bible studyVictory in the Word Ministries is conducting a Christian Outreach Ministry through a series of Bible study fellowship sessions on Wednesdays at the Tamaqua YMCA.
