Could another gym eventually be added in Lehighton?

On a 6-1 vote, borough council on Monday agreed to begin the procedure for a feasibility/engineering study to build a new gym at the Grove. Councilman Joe Flickinger was opposed.Councilman Scott Rehrig once again brought the matter up for discussion, and said he would like to see council begin the procedure.But, Flickinger questioned why the borough needs another gym, as currently the Lehighton Recreation Community Center serves borough youth.After a testy exchange between Rehrig and Flickinger, council agreed to take the action.Rehrig previously said he believes a new gym would further enhance the community.The new gym would either be in addition to the recreation center, or located either below the existing building, or added on to the existing building.Garbage ordinanceAlso on Monday, council adopted the revised garbage ordinance.According to the new ordinance, residents should place their garbage out no sooner than noon the day before garbage collection, and must bring trash bins back by no later than noon the day after garbage collection.Other actionAlso on Monday, council:• Granted a 60-day waiver request on the Lehighton Area School District's new elementary center land development plan, as approved by the borough's planning commission at its March 8 meeting.• Approved an invoice received for the installation of inlets at Fourth and Cedar streets.• Approved a resolution to match funding for either the Baer Memorial Park project, or Grove rehabilitation project, if awarded the grant.• Agreed to advertise the pool palm tree and soft ice cream machine.• Agreed to obtain prices from other vendors who provide the same service as Unifirst for fire resistant clothing for the borough's Light & Power Department.• Agreed to have the borough solicitor check in on truck traffic for Gypsy Hill Road.• Agreed to be on board with the advertising of the Council of Governments Ordinance, which will be a joint advertisement for all participating municipalities• Approved a request to hold a 5K Kids Gone Mad Run/Walk at the Trailhead on May 14.• Approved a request to hold a 5K at the Trailhead on Oct. 8.• Approved a donation in the amount of $250 to the United Veteran's Organization for Memorial Day services.• Approved the Carbon County Senior Games May 3-12, as well as the use of the Baer Memorial Field, and Recreation Center.• Approved the purchase of gift certificates for Administrative Professionals Day.
