A Lehighton man charged with sexually assaulting a young child 15 years ago waived a preliminary hearing scheduled for him on Thursday.
Joseph F. Curran II, 35, has reached a guilty plea agreement with the Carbon County District Attorney's office.Curran faces charges of aggravated indecent assault, indecent exposure, indecent assault and corruption of minors. The charges stem from incidents involving a female who told police she was 5 to 7 years old when she was assaulted by Curran.Curran is free on $2,500 bail. The hearing had been scheduled to be held at the office of District Judge Edward Lewis in Jim Thorpe. The plea arrangement occurred after about an hour of negotiations and discussions between Curran, his lawyer Brian Collins, Lehighton police Detective Scott S. Prebosnyak, the victim and a representative of the District Attorney's office.Prebosnyak said in his affidavit that on Dec. 10, 2015, "the Lehighton Police Department received two child line reports via fax regarding sexual assault." The fax said there were two cases, both involving Curran. On Dec. 13, one victim came to the Lehighton Police Station "to report that she was a victim of sexual assault," the affidavit says. She gave descriptions of the assaults to the police. The incidents, said the affidavit, happened from 2001 to 2003.
