With warmer weather just around the corner, the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is hoping to recruit volunteers to pitch in with a spring cleaning of the 165 miles worth of trail.
"We are trying to encourage local users of the trail to participate in the maintenance and promotion of the historic resource," said Lauren Golden, Trail and Outreach Coordinator for the D&L Trail. The nonprofit organization held a volunteer kickoff day in Jim Thorpe's train station on Saturday.Golden and trail manager Scott Everett were on hand with information on future volunteer opportunities in the area.According to Golden, the organization is looking for trail tenders, volunteers to help with trail maintenance, "places where small groups of people can tackle the area."People are also needed to work as trail patrol, aiding hikers along the miles of trail with simple first aid or directions."If they see someone who needs help, or notify us of fallen trees and trail conditions. It's such a large corridor, we can only have so many eyes on the trail," Golden said. "We would like a patrol for every mile."The organization will roll out a Seven Saturdays campaign late in spring where for seven consecutive Saturdays volunteers can gather to help spruce up one of seven trailheads in Carbon County."The Seven Saturdays project is a good chance for employers looking for opportunities for their staff to volunteer," Golden said. The D&L organization will hold a second Volunteer Kick Off Day in Easton at the National Canal Museum onSaturday. For more information on the trail or volunteer opportunities visit
