Chestnuthill Township is equipping its road department for snow removal and road repairs.

A new Freightliner 114SD single-axle dump truck with a plow and spreader will cost $85,840. The stainless steel body will cost an additional $71,252. The board approved the purchase in September was for $157,092.The township has 155 miles of road which is among the highest number in the state for a municipality of its size. The fleet usually has 10 trucks of varying sizes at any one time. A truck like this Freightliner is expected to last a minimum of 10 years in its original condition. The township also keeps a strict maintenance program and will regularly retrofit the truck body when it becomes rusted from the road salt. Retrofits cost the township around $20,000 to $25,000.According to township manager Dave Albright, with this type of maintenance program a truck could remain in service for 20 years.On Tuesday evening the supervisors also approved the purchase of a brand-new 2016 2500 GMC crew cab for use by the roadmaster. The new truck, which will be purchased through the Costars program, will cost $36,579.85 and will include the plow package."This blizzard of 2016 cost the township $45,000," said supervisor Chris Eckert. "That's just one storm. It makes you appreciate the hard work the road crews do."
