Marian swimmers, Tamaqua girls 200 relay shine at districts

OREFIELD - Swimming on a big stage is such a different level of competition.

The adrenaline kicks in and seed times can often be disregarded. The Times News Area brought home a handful of medals, which included two first place finishes during the District 11 class AA swimming championship at Parkland High School on Friday.Three Marian Catholic representatives earned medals on day one.Katie Kurzinsky is the defending 100-yard backstroke champion, but took first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.89. She will look to win another backstroke title on Saturday.Freshman Danny Berlitz broke the District 11 record by a nose, posting a 1:57.62 time in the 200 IM.He said, "I'm used to USA to swimming where the last heat is a little exciting, but this environment is amazing," he said. "I love to swim here. I saw the distance record when I walked in today, I wasn't sure if I got it, but I thought I was really close. I wanted to win districts, make it to states and finish top-eight there, so tomorrow should be pretty exciting."The Lady Raiders' 200 medley team was a low seventh-seed, but brought an early excitement to the crowd when they finished second on Friday's initial event."I was hoping for a first in the relay, but I'll settle for a second," said Tamaqua head coach Al Bostdorff. "We set a goal this year of individual times, we know we didn't have the depth to compete on a team basis. We have five or six meets this year when we won nine out of 12 events or so, and we still lost."Rebecca Kanaskie was one of the Lady Raiders who was impressive in the silver medal relay."Our kids are doing well in practice, and here we are with our them doing well," explained the Tamaqua coach. "All of the kids have improved their times, and most of the kids are young, so we'll be able to work with them again. It's about the friendships and memories you make while you're doing it, too. I enjoy all of these kids, because I coach them all in the summer. A lot of these kids are toward to the top of their classes academically. They even challenge me sometime,s and it's fun to coach them."About an hour later, Kanaskie cut roughly seven seconds off of her seed time and earned a another silver medal, this time in the 200 IM.She said, "This week has been a roller coaster. It's been ridiculous. To swim that and get my best time of the season makes me beyond excited and proud. I put everything in the pool, there is nothing more I could have done and I'm just really happy. We weren't expecting that in the relay. Lexi (Kerstetter) came in first, then your mental state immediately changes. You're then thinking 'oh my', anything really is possible today. We can do anything that we want to do. "The other TN area second place belonged to Marian's Timmy Dando in the 200 freestyle."I was definitely going to try for second, I thought that I could get it," explained Dando. "My goal was to go under 1:50, but I didn't expect to go 1:47 today. Now that I have it, I feel really good. I think I can get to states with that. Obviously, Mahlon (Reihman) is an excellent swimmer. Everyone in that heat was great. I love it here, I really like the pool and I preform well at Parkland. In the 500 tomorrow, my goal is to go under five minutes."Jose Avila joined Dando on the podium with a solid third place finish in the 200, with a time of 1:49.65.Avila said, "I was really nervous to be honest. This was the race I was really worried about because everyone was really close. Last year, it hurt and I knew it was going to again. But, it felt good. I think I could have done better, but it was alright. My family and a bunch of friends were here. I was hoping to place higher than I did last year. I got third again but I'm happy with that."The class AA competition will continue at 10a.m. on Saturday at Parkland.ANOTHER NEW RECORD... Aside of Berlitz setting a new mark in the 200 IM, Salisbury's Mahlon Reihman swam a record setting 1:41.05 in the 200 freestyle.TWO-TIMERS...
