A Carbon County man, who crashed his vehicle was driving drunk, then fled while his cousin was seriously injured in the crash, was sentenced on Thursday in the county court.

Edward Eugene Whitehead III, 30, of Lehighton, was sentenced on charges of driving under suspension-DUI related, and recklessly endangering another person. He previously pleaded to the charges.Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced him to serve two to one day less 24 months in prison on the recklessly endangering count and 30 to 60 days on a days in prison on the suspension count. He must serve the full 60 days, Matika ruled, with the terms running concurrent.State police at Lehighton arrested Whitehead following a crash along West Lizard Creek Road near Lauchnors Drive, in East Penn Township on May 10, 2015. Whitehead admitted he was going 70 mph when his vehicle left the road and crashed into a utility pole. After the crash Whitehead fled the scene while his cousin Timothy Whitehead was seriously injured.Matika told the defendant, "What is bothersome in this case, you left the scene while your cousin lay seriously injured."Because of that, Matika said he was denying Whitehead's application for the Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest. Matika also denied a weekend sentence because Whitehead was not currently employed. Matika told him if he secures a job later, then he can petition the court to reconsider the request for weekends.In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Whitehead to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a fine on the suspension count of $500, license suspended for a year, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and render 50 hours of community service when released on parole. On two summary motor vehicle code violations he was fined a total of $125 and costs.He will begin the jail term at 7 p.m. March 11.
