Weatherly landmark for sale

Weatherly borough’s best-known landmark is on the market once again, and naturally creating a lot of interest among residents.

The C.M. Schwab School, which has towered over the borough for more than 100 years, recently changed hands. The bank that now owns the property is planning to market it for sale. But the Realtor showing the property says it’s limited to serious inquiries only.“We will not parade anyone through the property as that would be a waste of our time, efforts, and perhaps upset the neighbors unjustly,” Realtor Tracey Scofield said. The property attracts a lot of attention from residents, but unfortunately, needs a lot of work after its previous owner allowed time and neglect to take their toll on the brick icon, which last operated as a school in 1991.Over that time, a gaping hole opened in the school’s gym roof, and several of the school’s hundred-plus windows were broken.According to Scofield, the property is currently zoned for an age-restricted community like a retirement or nursing home, and that is what it is being marketed for.The bank is doing some work at the property. But Scofield said that any real renovation won’t occur until the building gets a new owner.“The seller bank will get the building into secure and possibly safe condition. There will be no capital improvements until a new buyer takes possession,” Scofield said. The previous owner, who purchased it in the late 1990s, lost the property to foreclosure last year. Laurence Halstead III had been facing more than $350,000 in fines from the borough for letting the property fall into disrepair under his ownership. Those fines are not attached to the property, rather, to Halstead himself, borough officials said last week. The borough initially fined him about $6,000 in 2011 for violations of its property maintenance code, but he appealed. A judge found that the initial fine should be applied to each day that Halstead did not correct the issues, leading to the final figure. The bank sued Halstead for $285,000 in a foreclosure action last year. The borough will alert residents to any news regarding the Schwab school at weatherlypa.org.

The hands on the Seth Thomas clock tower are stopped.
