Nesquehoning is continuing to look at its streetlights situation.

The borough currently has 418 streetlights in operation, which cost the town approximately $80,000 annually.Councilwoman Mary Fox and Councilmen Frank Jacobs and George Sabol reported Wednesday that they are going through the borough street by street to see where they feel lights could be removed and find areas where lights are needed.Fox said they will continue to look at the lights and bring their findings back to council.The town has been looking at its lighting situation since October 2014, when Councilman Frank Jacobs reported that the monthly bill for lighting the streets was approximately $6,700.At that time, council discussed if some lights could be removed without compromising the safety of the residents.In December 2014, council received a quote from PPL Electric for reducing the wattage of 38 lights that were 150-watt lights. The proposal called for reducing them to 70 watts to save the town $8,000 annually.This past December, paperwork was filed with PPL to lower the streetlight wattage to 70 watts and put the borough on the list to change over all streetlights to LED lights.Other businessNesquehoning Borough Council also acted on or discussed the following items:• Approved Panther Valley's request to use the Nesquehoning Recreation Center as an evacuation site in the case of a school emergency where evacuation is necessary.• Announced that there is an opening on the borough civil service commission. Anyone interested in serving on the commission should send a letter to the borough office.• Adopted the snow ordinance with a slight change in wording for police enforcement during the storm. The proposed wording change was advertised before the adoption.• The next neighborhood watch meeting will take place at 7

p.m.Tuesday at the borough hall. The group's April meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 5 at the borough hall.• Approved communications regarding the Anthracite Triathlon going through the borough on July 17.• Approved the American Cancer Society's telethon committee to do a donation collection in the borough on Fridayand March 25. The approval made it clear that the committee is collecting at its own risk.
