Tamaqua Community Art Center activities for March
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, the Tamaqua Community Art Center will present an evening of traditional Celtic music and Irish Step Dancing with the Celtic Martins on March 12.
The Martins hail from southeastern Pennsylvania and began performing publicly in 2004. Formerly known as the Martin Family Band, the troupe is composed of parents Nelson and Elaine Martin, their six children, and family friend Elijah Roeder. Nelson and Elaine are the guitarists, while Roeder serves as the band's drummer. The children all contribute in different ways. Emily plays the fiddle and bagpipes. Melissa plays the fiddle, guitar, accordion and Irish whistles. Brian plays guitar and percussion. Christy can be found playing the fiddle, bagpipes and cello, while Zach and Alex round out the ensemble on fiddles. Emily, Melissa and Christy provide the Irish step dancing.The show will begin at 7 p.m.• Special events during the month will begin with a meeting of the Bucket List Book Club at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. March's selection will be "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan. The book club is free and welcomes new members.• A meet and greet for artist Kevin Smith II will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. onMarch 3. Smith currently resides in Tamaqua and recently completed a 4,000-mile walk across America with the group United Souls of Awareness.• A beginners' fly tying class, presented by Schuylkill County Trout Unlimited, will be held from 1-4 p.m. March 6. Registration is required, but the class is free. Vises and materials will be provided.• If you've ever wondered how they make those delicious little pockets of pastry and potato filling known as pierogies, you will have the opportunity on March 12. A pierogi making workshop will be held at 1:30 p.m. Participants will need to bring their own rolling pins and dough sheets.Regular activitiesA number of regular activities are featured as weekly activities at the center.Mondays are busy with Music Together sessions for young children and their parents at 10 a.m., bisque ceramics at 1 p.m., clay pottery, mosaic and yoga classes all at 6 p.m. and Coal Cracker Chorus rehearsals at 7:30 p.m.The
L.O.L. literary group meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays, and paint and sip classes are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on March 8 (Irish cottage) and March 10 (Robin's nest). A Chalk and Chew class is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on March 15.Harmonica classes are held at noon, while piano and voice classes are held at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday.On Thursdays, you will find mosaic, pottery and ceramic classes at 6 p.m. Kids' art classes will be held at 6 p.m. on March 10 and March 24.Fridays feature yarn classes at 9 a.m. and Music Together sessions at noon.Saturdays are kept busy with guitar, piano and voice lessons at 9 a.m.; sculpture and pottery classes at 11 a.m.; kids paint at 10 a.m. on March 12; children's Creative Eats cooking session at 10 a.m. on March 19.The center is also sponsoring a bus trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum on March 13 to view the work of Tamaqua artist Joseph Marioni.The art center is located at 125 Pine St. in Tamaqua.
