Aides to the grand marshal

Four people have been named by the local Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians to serve as "aides to the grand marshal" for the 19th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade to be held in March in Jim Thorpe.

Ronald Sheehan, Carbon County treasurer and charter member of the Carbon County Ancient Order of Hiberians, said the aides, selected by the AOH and the Ladies AOH members, are named based on how the they represent the organization's mission of promoting friendship, unity and Christian charity.The parade will step off at 1 p.m. March 13 on Broadway in the county-seat community. The grand marshal will be Francis "Snitz" O'Donnell of Jim Thorpe.The aides, two men and two women, are selected by their respective orders. They are: James Clauser, Donald "Hank" Williams, Margaret Diehm and Sheila O'Neil.They will join the grand marshal in being honored at the annual Grand Marshal's Dinneron March 11 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club, Mahoning Township, during which time they will be officially presented their sashes.The aides are:Donald WilliamsDonald F. "Hank" Williams grew up in the Pleasant Hill area of Mauch Chunk, a son of the late Donald "Tarzan" and Katheen (Hontz) Williams.He attended Mauch Chunk Catholic High School.He has four siblings, Donna Haupt, Mary Gavornik and James and William Williams; a daughter, Stacey Rehl; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Jessica Rehl.He was a mason for Norbert Herman for 15 years and was later employed by the Jim Thorpe Area School District as a custodian for 28 years.Throughout the years, he was a coach for Little League Baseball, played in pool and dart leagues and was active in the Jim Thorpe Sportsmen Club. He is a current member of the Fraternal Order of Orioles, Beaver Run Rod and Gun Club and Diligent Fire Company No. 1, Jim Thorpe, and a social member of the Lehighton Fire Company.Williams is an active security volunteer for the Carbon County Fair and a leader of the Carbon County 4-H Livestock Club.He and his wife, Kristin, enjoy traveling around the U.S. He loves driving his Mustang in all the local parades, including Halloween, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and St. Patrick's Day parades for many years.Sheila O'NeilSheila L. O'Neil is a daughter of the late Joseph and Arline O'Neill and has two siblings, Joe and Beverley.Raised in the family home, she is the fourth generation to be raised in the homestead.She was educated at the Schwenksville School, attended Empire Beauty School, where she received a teaching certificate, and had her own beauty salon in the hometown while teaching in the local vocational-technical school.She went on to be part of the hair research team of Redken hair and makeup, delivering a "people to people" program for marketing and makeup applications. Her salon became a place where Girl Scouts could earn their merit badges and vo-tech students could work before their exams.In the early '70s, Sheila became part of the community EMS volunteer program, becoming one of the first female ambulance drivers in the state. She also qualified as an EMT instructor and received her national certification.In the '80s, she began a cottage business of gourmet food line that earned her recognition on the Home Show in Hollywood, California. She also participated in Youth at Risk programs.In 1995, she and her partner, Robert Ewashko, purchased their current property on Broadway in Jim Thorpe, where they operate the Gilded Cupid Bed and Breakfast.She has served on the board of directors of the Mauch Chunk Historical Society, being a former president, and has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce since 1995.She has a son Christian, who resided in California with his wife and son, and a grandson who lives in Boston.Margaret DiehmMargaret "Maggie" Diehm was born in East Mauch Chunk, a daughter of the late Victor and Crescentia (Herman) Izzo. One of seven children, her siblings are Joanne, Mary Louise, Arlene, Dorothy, Victor and Kay.She attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School, Jim Thorpe, and graduated in 1965 from Jim Thorpe High School.She is married to Bill Diehm and is the mother of Andrew and Bernadette, wife of Jack Krajcirik, and the grandmother of Emily Krajcirik.A self-employed beautician, she owned and operated her own beauty salon for 44 years.Jim ClauserJim Clauser is a native of Northumberland County who has resided in Jim Thorpe for the past 26 years. He is a son of the late James R. and Rosemarie (Butzko) Clauser and is married to the former Colleen Scandle.He graduated in 1977 from Lourdes Regional High School, Jim Thorpe, and in 1979 from Williamsport Area Community College with a degree in forest technology.Clauser worked for the Northumberland County Conservation District as a soil and water conservation technician before accepting a forestry technician position for a private consulting firm, working from Center to Wayne counties.He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, working in Northampton and Lehigh counties, and in 1990 became the manager of the Carbon County Conservation District, a position he held for 20 years before joining PPL Electric Utilities as a senior environmental professional.Clauser is a past board member of the Western Pocono Trout Unlimited, a member of the Paradise Hunting and Fishing Club, Quakake Creek Valley, and F. and A.M. Lodge No. 242, Jim Thorpe. He and his wife are members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe.He was appointed to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Citizens Advisory Council from 2009-2014, was recognized by the Wildlands Conservancy with the "Friend of the Lehigh River Award" and the 2008 Northeast Pennsylvania Environmental Partnership Award for his environmental stewardship work in Carbon County.
