Fast start lifts Lehighton to win

HELLERTOWN - While the rain that fell around the area most of the day Tuesday had stopped, there was a different type of rain falling in Saucon Valley's gym Tuesday night; it was raining threes, as in three-point shots.

Saucon Valley hit nine three-pointers, many of them from well behind the arc, but couldn't overcome a tenacious Lehighton team that left the gym with a 62-52 win in the first round of the District 11 3A Tournament.Hunter Greene tallied 17 points, including scoring the first seven points that Lehighton put on the board, pushing the Indians to an early lead that put Saucon Valley back on its heels from the start."We just needed someone to step up and get us into a rhythm and then get everyone else to contribute," said Greene of the fast start. While Lehighton got off to a fast start, the Panthers kept chipping away and tied the game at 14 on a three-pointer from Kyle Cyphers just 10-seconds into the second quarter. Saucon Valley would grab their first lead half-way through the second when Dave Troyan, who came off the bench to score 15 points, hit a three to put the Panthers up 21-20.Greene and fellow 6' 4" senior Nick Chambers combined for 25 points and dominated the rebounding game throughout the game.Having seemingly put the game away when Chambers slammed down a dunk with 2:28 left in the game, putting the Indians up 52-37 for their biggest lead of the night. Saucon Valley would score 15 points in the final two-minutes of the game, thanks to four different players hitting long three-pointers that Lehighton wasn't able to guard against. The three other points came on three foul shots from Cyphers after Chambers fouled him in the act of shooting another three-pointer."The shots they were making were, I'm going to say 'borderline ridiculous,' I mean they were 12-feet behind the line and they were knocking them down, but our scouting report did say that they can shoot the ball," said coach Rich OertnerTHIRD TIME'S THE CHARM? ...Lehighton's win sets up a third meeting with Pottsville, the top-seeded team in the tournament. That game will be played Friday night at Minersville. The Crimson Tide downed Lehighton 54-45 in early January and then beat them 53-36 in the rematch on February 1st. "Both times that we played them, we played them hard for three quarters," recalled Oertner. "It just seems that when they get down to the end, they can throw too many guys at you. Tonight I went a little deeper and played some J.V. kids who did a nice job tonight and gave us a little bit of time."TIGHT DEFENSE... Lehighton's defense tightened in the final quarter, allowing just one point through the first six-minutes of the quarter. Kyle Cyphers hit a three-pointer with 1:50 left to play to cut the Indians lead to 54-40.INJURY REPORT... Saucon Valley was without leading scorer Mike Kane, who underwent shoulder surgery on Monday...
